The Best Things in Life Are Free!! June/July
Tuesday 28th May 2013 | Alex
FREE ‘The Surgeon and the Photographer’
@ The Rain Room, The Barbican Curve Gallery, March 18th-
You can check out the Canadian artist Geoffrey Farmer’s installation piece on Silk Street from March 18th. Acting as the opener to The Barbican’s ‘Dancing Around Duchamp’ season, Farmer crafts hundreds of puppet-like figurines from magazine cuttings in a style that emulates the work of John Cage and Merce Cunningham. Farmer’s done collages to death, but each character is multifarious – pleasing from one perspective but confusing and angering from another. The Guardian’s Laura Cumming called them ‘animated statues’; we think they’re terrifying. @BarbicanCentre; 020 7638 4141
FREE City of London Festival
@ The City, June 23rd -
Started 1962 as a way to revitalise the cultural life of the City, the festival’s become a leading arts event. You can expect curious music, cosmic visual art and attention-grabbing speeches, and this time around there are over 50 ticketed performances. Some of it’s a bit unusual – June 24th welcomes Hugh Johnson for Lecture ‘Does the City have the Right Trees?’ (actually, there’s a weird amount of stuff about trees) but if that’s not your thing check out the Parkour and street dance at Devonshire Square on June 26th. Maybe skip on ‘Bad Ass Brass’.
FREE The Anatolian Cultural Fete
@ Clissod Park, Hackney
They’re excited to announce that it’s their 7th anniversary. I’m not sure why – there’s nothing significant about that, is there? Catch the event from June 8th – 16th and enjoy some Anatolian cuisine, theatre and music with like-minded people – 50 thousand people turned up last year! Vendors will be modelled on Istanbul’s famous ‘Grand Bazaar’ and organisers insist (in the face of strong arguments to the contrary) that this hasn’t happened before. Either way, there’s loads going on: eating competitions, a marching band and oil-wrestling will keep you entertained. It’s basically your run-of-the-mill cultural-fete on a gigantic scale. Free. (With oil-wrestling).
