Hudson Mohawke : The Lowdown

Friday 24th May 2013 | Keshav

It’s relatively unknown that Hudson Mohawke is signed to Kayne West’s G.O.O.D music label. The Glasgow based producer has been making waves not only in the world of house music where he began but also in the hip hop world as a fine producer. Being one of the producers behind Kanye’s massive hit 'Mercy' he is well on the path to superstardom. HudMo as he is more commonly known to his fans released his first album Butter in October 2009. It was his way of experimenting with different sounds and announcing himself on the house scene as something fresh and different. The album is packed full of big build ups and big bass beats. It was no doubt a platform which helped the Scot launch straight to the top. Tracks such as Fuse, which contains a superb flute opening followed by an absolutely perfect bass line make the album a real house club favourite. Tracks such as 'OOPS!' Helped the album have diversity with a traditional house feel but still a distinctively HudMo sound. Critics described it as a clash of different genres which fit perfectly together.

After the huge commercial success of Disclosure’s ‘White Noise’ , Hudson Mohawke reworked the song in true Hudson Mohawke style , giving it a much more relaxed feel, adding percussion and a pumping bass. The new elements made the song feel different to Disclosure’s version. It’s this originality which sees HudMo heading up some of the biggest club nights across the country and being in so much demand in Europe where his music is starting to make waves. As a producer Hudson Mohawke finds it difficult to stick to one kind of instrument or simple melody it’s the way he weaves songs together which make you wanting more. It’s common with house producers to find it difficult to branch out into a different style of music, however as the artist himself claims, he is a ‘turntableist’ who started off by roughly mixing jungle and rave shows. This shows a deep underlying passion for understanding his musical roots which helps him when creating music. His new song ‘Thunderbay’ is the one song that defines his sound, edgy and bouncy with a twist. HudMo is getting bigger and bigger with each new mix and set he plays it’s surely not long before he starts headling some of the biggest club nights and festivals around the world.
