British Black Music Month 2013 Opens With A Debate And Ends With A Club Night
Black History Month (BBMM) kicks off this year on June 1 with the ‘What Is Black Music?’ debate. It forms part of a day’s programme of activities organised by the UK Black Music Research Unit at the University of Westminster’s Marylebone Road campus.
The day of discussions is wrapped up the evening by joining the MusicConnex crew for the MCX Live Showcase, which is the official BBMM2013 launch live event at Labroke Grove’s The Flyover club. This showcase features a live set by two American, and five British soul/R&B acts including Tasita D’Mour and Sherry Davis Root, plus the likes of Solar Radio’s JM on the decks.
There will be open days on Fridays and Saturdays from mid-June to July at the Coming Soon Club near Wembley Stadium, where there will be vinyl, CDs and books on sale, informal discussions, opportunities for aural demonstrations on the CD and record decks, and engagement with industry experts such as producer/remixer Kwame Kwateng during the ‘Veterans’ Front Room: Talking Vinyl & Music Industry Memories’ sessions.
BBMM2013 ends with the Your Fave BBMM Videos club night at Upstairs @ The Ritzy on Saturday July 20. It will be an opportunity to let your hair down listening to a range of domestic black music genres played by the likes of Mi-Soul DJ Lindsay Wesker, and also see the countdown of popular BBM videos.
