Event Review: SubSoul Sessions @ Vibe Bar Brick Lane: Ben Knight, Codec, Copy Paste Soul, Second City 20/03/2013

Vibe Bar hosts the latest of SubSoul's free live streamed sessions, representing the best new artists in post-dubstep, future garage and soulful house.

It was a cold, drizzly Wednesday evening and Brick Lane at first appeared deserted apart from the curry houses lining the street. At 9pm, it hardly seemed like the ideal setting for a messy night of house. However, as my guests and I approached the classic Brick Lane venue of Vibe Bar, the pounding sound of bass grew more and more audible in the stillness.

Founded in 2011, SubSoul is a brand and popular Youtube channel which describes itself as “The Soulful side of Bass Music...... A Brand and Channel bringing you fresh Post-Dubstep, Future Garage & Soulful Bass”. They hosted the first of their live sessions in October 2012 in Shoreditch, streaming the sets live on the UKF Live, following in the footsteps of the Boiler Room for raising the profiles of upcoming DJs. After the success they now host regular live streamed Sessions in various venues, mostly in East London.

As we arrived the crowd seemed to be a mixture of casual drinkers wanting to relax after a work and the typical East London, hipster, in-the-know types. Codec was playing a chilled out set to match the early evening atmosphere, despite the volume and bass making it almost impossible to sit still. The pace picked up even further with the arrival of Copy Paste Soul, a DJ whose profile has increased recently with the success of his latest release, “Let It Go”: in playing this and many other of the most popular songs from the channel from the likes of TCTS and XXXY, Copy Paste Soul gave a set which stayed faithful to the SubSoul ethos, whilst tempting more and more people away from the sofas and onto the dancefloor. By the time Second City took over the decks at half 10, the atmosphere in Vibe Bar was so electric it might as well have been 1am on a Saturday night. As well as playing his most well-known track “Every Hour”, Second City responded to the atmosphere by playing a succession of radio 1 style crowd pleasers: Your Love by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, the Skream remix of Duke Dumont’s 100%, and Russ Chimes’ Turn Me Out. By 11pm the dancefloor was packed, beer was being spilt, and even the most image conscious bearded East London stereotypes were throwing shapes next to the speakers. The security staff had trouble pushing all of the partygoers out at half 11!

All of us had a much better night than we were even expecting and were still suffering the after effects the next day, quite an achievement for a night which finished so early. Amazingly the event was completely free, and even the upcoming all-nighter at Rivington Street hosted by SubSoul will only cost £6. Highly recommended.
