The British Reggae Industry Awards

Friday 22nd February 2013 | Emily

We checked out the British Reggae Industry Awards last night at the Indig02. It was a small but exciting night following some of the highlights of British reggae artists today keeping the reggae scene alive! Winners included David Rodigan who won best radio DJ, the best community radio station was Roots FM, best promoters of reggae were Hawk Eye Records, best male vocalist was Maxi Priest, the best male and female newcomer were siblings Christopher and Lovella Ellis, and the best British band were Goldmasters All Stars. Evidently a great deal of work went into this night, including huge fancy lights in all colours of the Jamaican flag.

There were also flamboyant glittering performances by up and coming artists such as Princess Barbie, Andrew Sloley, Chardel Roden, Fire Stone, Calvin Salmon, Dixie Peach, and Skibu, as well as I-foundation and the Black Stones.

Lady Lex exclaimed on stage that 'in an industry where there is little money, it's not really about the money, it's about the music.' From the U.K. with influences from traditional reggae, we cannot forget reggae's intriguing history. We need to bring reggae back to the masses, those bouncing beats, the freedom and collectivity.

Enjoy some top quality reggae this year and check out this track by I-Foundation live at Nemzeti Galleria:
