Steven Wilson still knows how to bend those genres just right

Thursday 21st February 2013 | lina

Steven Wilson has been part of the London music scene since 1987 when he formed the band
Porcupine Tree. The group from Hemel Hempstead are full-on musical scientists. They’ve been
experimenting with every genre from progressive metal and trance to alternative and psychedelic
rock. So far, the musical scientists have managed to bash out ten studio albums over their career.

One thing’s clear from their discography; this band’s got diversity. Earlier days are trippy and spaced
out with tunes like ‘Radioactive Toy’ off their debut album On the Sunday of Life (1992).

But their more recent music from albums like Fear of a Blank Planet (2007) sound like an entirely
different band. A whole lot more alternative and a whole lot less psychedelic. Hear the difference in
this title track:

The group’s frontman, Steven Wilson has been known for collaborating with a number of musicians
and forming different side projects like No-Man, I.E.M. and Blackfield. His upcoming release will be
his third solo album, The Raven that Refused to Sing (and other stories). From this promo video, it
sounds like the 45-year-old still knows how to combine all his musical influences to make a good tune.
Have a listen to the supernatural-inspired album dropping 25th February 2013. If the six-tracked album
tickles your fancy, don’t miss your chance to see Steven Wilson live at the Royal Festival Hall on 4 th
March.
