Legendary Roots Reggae Band, CULTURE performing @Islington Mill 21/3/13

Friday 15th February 2013 | Polly

On Tuesday 26th March @Islington Assembly Hall the legendary roots reggae band Culture is performing alongside new up and coming dub/roots artists Subujah and Mystikal Roots.

Culture formed in Jamaica in 1976 then known as The African Disciples. Shortly after Culture came together, they began working with the "Mighty Two" - producer Joe Gibbs and engineer Errol Thompson. Of the original trio, Joseph Hill (lead vocals), Albert Walker (backing vocals) and Kenneth Dayes (backing vocals), only Albert Walker is still performing in the group. Hill sadly died in Germany 2006 while the group was on tour. His son Kenyatta Hill is now the lead singer, Albert Walker & Telford Nelson are the backup vocals. He continues the conscious spirit of his father and Culture’s music.

Alongside the mighty Culture are two of the most talented roots/dub collectives in the U.K today. Subajah Family based in London first came about in early 2010. They are a collective of 4 featured artists, Subajah, I Jah, Barry Dread and Iya Kneel, backed by a (6 - 10 piece) band called 'Zion Tree' featuring the Brassika Horns. Together, they are culturally diverse, conscious and a powerful collaboration of talent. They have shared stages with some of the biggest names in reggae including Dawn Penn, ASWAD and Julian Marley. Check out their unique sound here,

Mystikal Roots is a new U.K record label that aims to produce ‘Concious Sounds for the Soul’. Roots Mystikal want to bring together the core sound of the bass in dub with Soul music to produce tracks with integrity and longevity that stand apart from the disposable ‘tracks’ that inundate the underground scene for the sole purpose of being incorporated into mixes. Check out their most recent tune Dub On a Mountain Pass to get a feel of their blessed sound.

This is set to be a great night of dub/roots music, it sees the coming together of one of roots reggae pioneer bands and two of the most important and talented collectives making reggae/dub music today. This night stands out from a lot of the events out there that claim to be promoting the reggae vibes, this is a night for conscious people who want to experience the true spirit of reggae. Know your roots and you will grow. True roots lovers don’t miss out, get your tickets now,
