Event Review: Reggae Roast 5th Birthday Bashment Special Jamdown, 9/2/13 @Plan B, Brixton
Reggae Roast are not just riding the new wave of U.K dub/reggae scene they are turning the tides. This three man sound system first received recognition after broadcasting on KISS FM with everyone’s favourite British reggae veteran, David Rodigan. Reggae Roast Jamdowns are now legendary nationwide, having had a selection of the best reggae/dub acts out there perform on their stage, including The Wailers, Lee Scratch Perry and Collie Budz. Their label, ‘Reggae Roast Records’ has been responsible for producing and releasing some of the biggest tracks of recent memory, including ravers delight ‘Sensi Skank’, voted No.1 reggae track by Juno Records in 2011. Reggae Roast are transforming the current reggae/dub scene in Britain as they push and bend the boundaries of modern roots music. So I had big expectations of their 5th Birthday Jamdown. I was not disappointed. It was a true bashment banger. Headliner The Heatwave were my personal favourite as assisted with perfectly tuned in hosting from Parly B and Clapper Priest, the crowd came together to bounce, bump, grind and do a damn dutty wind. 1Xtra Dancehall specialist, Chris Goldfinger brought us the rampant force of the current dancehall sound from Jamaica and the U.K and the night just exploded, the atmosphere was off the chain. Vibration Lab closed the night with their future reggae/dub sounds that made full use of Plan B’s mighty Funktion One Soundsystem, their trippy ambient dub brought us simmering down as they sent the bassline deliciously rippling down your spine. Reggae Roast it was massive and the Birthday Bash you deserved.
