Listen Hard and Listen Good Because General Roots is Coming For You

Friday 25th January 2013 | Polly

Review of ‘The First Attack’, the debut EP from North London’s six pieced reggae band, General Roots

‘The First Attack’ fires its first banger ‘Generals in the Ghetto’ at you, infusing dark dub rhythms and feel good dancehall beats so the track’s lyrics become true and all you want to do is keep on skanking. General Roots have already been making a name for themselves since they formed in 2008, having had a busy year on the live festival circuit in 2012 playing at Outlook (Croatia), Boomtown Fair (U.K) and Secret Garden Party (U.K).

‘The First Attack’ is a strong selection of songs from some very talented musicians but the album lacks underlying coherency. General Roots experiment and blend the genres, ‘Why Can’t I Fall In Love’ is a clear nod to Lover’s Rock legends like Sugar Minott and Dennis Brown whilst the EP’s last track ‘Tired’ recalls the ambient dub sounds of the legendary King Tubby.

Reggae music has always been about freedom, spiritual growth and respecting its roots, ‘The First Attack’ musically echoes these values. General Roots are very talented musicians and it is great to see new instrumental reggae artists on the U.K scene – I expect big things from General Roots in the future. ‘The First Attack’ is a great debut EP and very aptly named – whilst it is very much a debut, it shows off with force this talented band’s not small musical arsenal.

Download the EP now on Itunes or go the band’s website, http://www.jointhegenerals.com for more information.
