Meat free Monday? Not likely, Macca…

Thursday 6th December 2012 | David

The Beatles legend has sent a letter to the current climate change conference asking them to take account of livestock production.

Paul McCartney has written to those involved in the climate change conference, imploring them to take into account the effect of the livestock sector on the climate. He wrote: "Although more and more evidence is coming to light showing how the growth of the global meat industry is having alarming environmental consequences, the impact of the livestock sector on global warming does not yet seem to have been acknowledged by the Conference of the Parties (COP)."

McCartney, a vegetarian and supporter of animal rights, suggested the implementation of a “meat free Monday” system whereby once a week, people would refrain from eating meat. This would cut livestock production and therefore help the environment. Plenty of environmental experts back the idea, which Paul said in his letter would “make a considerable difference to the future of the planet”. All very well, but maybe he should avoid trying to make a country-wide meal of it because a whole lot of people are going to disagree completely.

Obviously, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being a veggie. If that’s your choice, go right for it. It would just be nice if McCartney stopped using his status to try and shove it down our throats. This is coming from the guy who wrote to the 14th Dalai Lama asking why he wasn’t a vegetarian. Maybe some of us like a steak now and then, Paul – and if I’ve been out to one of Guestlist’s legendary Sunday night events, I want a bacon sandwich for breakfast. And no Beatle is going to change that.
