The MOBOs are back!
It’s that time of year that we all get excited about. The time of year where we celebrate the amazing Urban music that us Brits have to offer; we put on a spectacular show and we showcase, thank and award the talented musicians that we are so proud of. Yes, it’s the Music Of Black Origin ceremony, or the MOBOs to you and me. First hosted in 1996 by founders Kanya King MBE and Andy Ruffell, this year sees the 17th MOBO Award ceremony at Echo Arena Liverpool, on the 3rd of November. Previous years have had performances and appearances from an array of talented musicians, such as Justin Timberlake, Amy Winehouse, Dizzee Rascal, Usher, Destiny’s Child, Janet Jackson, the Marley Family, Dionne Warwick, Jay-Z, Rihanna and heaps more.
This year, there is already a line-up of performers well worth getting very excited about – those announced so far to perform at the MOBOs include Wiley, Emeli Sandé, Labrinth, Trey Songz and Conor Maynard.
As well as owning a much-coveted spot on the performers list, this year’s MOBOs looks set to be an unforgettable one for Emeli Sandé, who has been nominated 5 times in different award categories this year alone. After having the honour of performing at both London 2012’s Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, Emeli’s impending MOBOs stint is keeping up the level of ‘amazing’, and her year seems set to go out with an almighty bang. 2012 is definitely the year of the Sandé.
Looking to match her successes is Plan B, who after several impressive acting, directing and musical feats this year, has also been nominated for 5 MOBO awards, including Best Male, Best Album and Best Song.
Hot on their heels are nominees Rita Ora and Labrinth, who each have 4 award nominations which include Best Newcomer and Best Female for Ora, and Best Album and Best R&B/Soul for Labrinth. Here at The Guestlist Network, we’re wondering if any members of this Fantastic Four can top Jessie J’s phenomenal 4 award wins from the 2011 awards?
One of the most exciting categories however, must be for The Best International Act award, with a set of nominees that you really might get your knickers in a twist about. The biggest names in the game, new and old, are in the running for the gong; a list consisting of Jay-Z, Azealia Banks, Ne-Yo, Drake, Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, Rihanna, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Nas AND Rick Ross!
Before you start bouncing off the walls with the sheer anticipation and buzz that this information may have just generated, it is best advised that you Keep Calm and Read On. There’s more...
The ‘Best Song in association with PRS Music’ category this year for the first time features songs only performed and written or co-written by the artists themselves. Therefore, this category features the crème-de-la-crème, musical geniuses such as the nation’s favourite ginger, Ed Sheeran (sorry Ron Weasley, we love you too! Mick Hucknall - you’re number 3. But none of you are nominated for MOBOs so you’re both pretty irrelevant right now).
