Reviewing Pilgrim Angry, between emotion and energy

Monday 22nd October 2012 | Laura

Watch UK band's new video for the single ‘Time For Us’, from their debut album, Out of the Blue.

Listening to Out of the blue, Pilgrim Angry’s debut album, is a sense-awakening and emotional experience. The listener is constantly challenged by the sounds and surprised by the variety of thrilling melodies that the album comprises, every song brings something new to the whole picture. This represents the intentions of lead singer, Mark Smith, to “capture the sounds, smells and sights of nature, of the mundane and the exceptional, creating a diverse mix of emotion and energy, sewn together with threads of lyrical soul”. From the classical openings of ´Pretty Pictures´ to the more indie rythms of ´Head´, the album experiments with all the sounds that this combination of rock and classical music can create. The personality of the band, dyed with contradictions between serenity and turmoil, is the key to their sound which is the product of a long pilgrimage. They have found a genuine way to combine the melancholy of classical music with the force of rock - sometimes contained, sometimes unleashed - all orchestrated by the deep and suggesting voice of Mark Smith.

With the likes of Muse and Radiohead, the UK band (who released their debut album last August trough Turning Worm Records and Nova distribution) use the term 'rock – classical' to describe themselves. Sam O'Sullivan (U2 Studio Manager) says: “When I first heard their music I was stunned by the brilliance of the musical arrangements and could see that their talents put them in a class of their own. We are listening here to music that takes you to another place and excites and is full of promise”. Pilgrim Angry is formed by Mark Smith (singer/songwriter) and Ian Livingstone (musician/composer/producer), who are throwing electrifying performances with a three piece band, keys, string quartet and additional guest singers. The band just released a new video for the track ‘Time For Us’, and are currently working on their second album Into The Red, which they describe as: “very warm/middle eastern feel but still full of strings, piano and rock”.
