Will Dr Dre's Detox only be an EP?

RnB/Hip Hop | Friday 19th October 2012 | Amy

Hip-hop’s most anticipated album may only have five or six songs.

Music stations across the world have been waiting for the day when Dr Dre’s latest album arrives through their door. However, it has recently been revealed that this album may not be entirely what the music industry or fans have been expecting.

In a recent interview in France, 50 Cent shared his thoughts on Dre’s Detox album in which he suspected that the forthcoming album may be released as an EP: “I’m not sure if he’s going to actually release a full CD or if he wants to just release the music that he’s comfortable with. He might do an EP or something like that – five or six songs.”

Detox has been in development for over a decade with Dre commenting that he’s “wrapping it up” in 2010. However, we still have yet to see any form of this new album with little sign that it will be released soon. This could be due to the number of other projects Dr Dre has been working on not to mention the numerous artists he has been collaborating with. However, it is the success of his headphones, Beats, which seems to have put a hold on the album release.

50 Cent went on to explain that the last time he saw Dre, he was in the studio working on something else. This could have been The Planets, one of his many projects. Allegedly, this project is the creation of an instrumental album based on his interest in astronomy and the “personality” of each celestial body. If this is the case, there will be another album to look forward to.

Although the music industry is awaiting Detox in anticipation, with HMV already offering pre-orders on the album, Dre seems to have decided to pursue other interests and subsequently may have lost his motivation to release Detox at this moment. Fans may be disappointed with how little Dre will be offering, but in the eyes of hip-hop, he is still a legendary artist and producer.
