Stone Sour stream new album

Thursday 18th October 2012 | David

Corey Taylor’s side project has gone a lot heavier than in previous releases in the first part of the group’s fourth LP.

House of Gold and Bones, Part 1 hasn’t been officially released yet, but thankfully for fans, Stone Sour’s latest offering has been streamed early, in advance of 22nd October, when it will come out properly. The second half of the double album is due to hit the market in March 2013, and will follow on from the first part as an on-going storyline. Frontman Taylor has penned 24 songs that will also form a four-part graphic novel series, set to be released early next year.

It certainly provides a different sound from previous albums. Guitarist Josh Rand has said that it is “like Stone Sour times ten”, adding that it includes “heavy stuff that’s like nothing we’ve ever done before”. Whilst this is predominantly true for Stone Sour, the record bears many resemblances to Taylor’s band Slipknot, with vocals in ‘My Name is Allen’ harking all the way back to the dark days of ‘Duality’, and the crunching riffs of ‘Gone Sovereign’ and the enigmatically named ‘RU 486’ having a distinctly heavy metal sound.

There are softer tracks thrown in for good measure, and they too have their own comparisons to previous Slipknot/Stone Sour tracks. ‘Taciturn’ stylistically resembles Slipknot’s emotional anthem ‘Snuff’, whilst ‘The Travellers, Part 1’ has the lilting pattern of Stone Sour’s own ‘Through Glass’. It’s true that the record as a whole is wildly different to the band’s older releases, although it does seem like Taylor has returned to his own heavier roots.

You can listen to the full track list here. If it’s your kind of music, then make sure you check Stone Sour’s December tour, with dates and venues below:
