Missy Elliott releases Triple Threat and 9th Innings

RnB/Hip Hop | Tuesday 18th September 2012 | Osh

Missy Elliott has today released brand new, full-length material for her 2012 return.

Last week, the Work It rapper released a short snippet of her new track ‘9th Innings’, which featured collaborator Timberland. Now, a full-length version has can be heard, alongside another track called ‘Triple Threat’.

Both feature Timberland who, like Missy, has not been heard from in a few years, aside from featuring on one or two tracks with the likes Katy Perry in 2010 and Ne-Yo earlier this year.

Since 2005, Missy Elliott hasn’t released any material, up till now. Back then, the shortage of edgy female rappers allowed Missy to carve her way into hip hop’s top class, with albums such as ‘Miss E…So Addictive’ in 2001 and ‘The Cookbook’ in 2005.

With the likes of Nicki Minaj and Azealia Banks now at large in the charts, Missy’s return may not have the same impact it would of years ago, especially as her new tracks don’t have the instant appeal of her previous work, such as Get Your Freak On.

Missy may disagree, with the opening line of ‘9th Innings’ maybe showing her opinion of the music she helped create between 1997 and 2005:

“2012 there will be no games, real rap, real bars, I’m not playing”

‘Triple Threat’ and ‘9th Innings’ are available now, with the album ‘Block Party’ awaiting a release date.
