The American singer-songwriter goes apocalyptic with the video for her latest single
The opening track from Cat Power’s latest album, Sun – released in early September – has a video to go with it, as of today. With a sound that is lilting and mournful, ‘Cherokee’ sees Power joining other survivors of some kind of zombie outbreak in the desert. Leaving signs for others in pink tape, the main group travel around, scavenging supplies, and, using strangely futuristic-looking weaponry, shooting the undead – who appear to glow rainbow colours before falling.
The song comes from Power’s first fully original album since 2006’s The Greatest. This effort has been five years in the making and is also entirely self-funded, following a spate of personal difficulties for the singer. Having been beset with issues following illness in 2006, it is refreshing to see Power writing original tracks again. Power has produced the album herself and, as well as playing almost all the instruments, she has recruited Iggy Pop to contribute vocals on ‘Nothin’ But Time’. Hopefully, this ninth studio album will mark a new chapter for this talented musician.
