Guinness World Records has confirmed that 101-year-old American Mary Allen Hardison is the oldest woman in history to fly a paraglider.
Mary, forever young, celebrated her 90th at Disneyland, but for her 101st she pulled out all the stops. A resident of Ogden, Utah, she decided to try tandem paragliding with an instructor. Guinness World records officially ratified the record on Tuesday.
Her 75-year-old son helped motivate her to undertake the paraglide. The rugged Centennial cited not wanting “to be left behind" by her offspring as the main reason behind her record-breaking attempt.
She made the leap in front of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "The wind was blowing hard," said instructor Kevin Hintze, impressed with the health of the old woman.
Upon receiving recognition of her record, Mary made the following statement: "I tell the elderly that they must continue to do things as long as they are physically able to. Be positive. People do not like grumpy people. If you feel you can, and even if you're older than me, do not hesitate to try to beat my record. "
