Catz and Dogz Interview

House | Wednesday 7th December 2011 | Osh

How did it start for you two? How did you first meet / get together?
We met for the first time on the internet, and we had a lot of friends in common as the city we live in is quite small. I think it was just a matter of time before we met. Grzegorz had a radio show back in the day, and I was djing small parties, I think we were 17 or 18. So after a couple of months we met clubbing.

What’s the state of clubbing like in Poland?
There are a lot of good festivals right now which we are playing this year, I think over the last 3 years it has grown a lot. Clubbing may not be as good, but the main thing is good parties, sometimes there will be a bad club but a good party, and vice versa. You just need to know where to go but there’s always parties going on. All my friends from Berlin say Poland is a really interesting place to visit.

Both you and Grzegorz made the move from 3 Channels (previous group) to Catz and Dogs, why was this?
When I was really young I used to sing in a choir, I met my best friend for 8 years who I was in 3 Channels with and Grzegorz, but after a while we realised that it was too much of a compromise. We made a couple of EPs as 3 Channels but it was a good decision to move on. We also didn’t want to be put in a corner, on our last album we were able to progress. There is a lot of work to learn to be able to do everything, but we like challenges and will try to push it more and more on the next album.

Were you purposefully trying to change the sound on the album?
It’s always funny when we make an album because the concept that we have at the beginning is the opposite to the one that we have at the end. After the first album we wanted to do something different and every track was like learning a new style of music because making dubstep is completely different to making disco, like a different sound and a different arrangement.

How did you meet Claude VonStroke?
It’s funny because he asked us to remix “The Whistler” but we didn’t like it, so we asked him if we could remix “Who’s Afraid Of Detroit?” which was the A side. Our remix was put out on limited vinyl and sold out in about a week and goes for like 80 euros online. After that we sent him some tracks and it was just natural, we have never met anyone that was so easy going.

At the moment you’re signed to Mothership, and you’ve released music on other labels, do you have any plans to launch your own label?
We actually have our own label! It’s been doing really well over the last few months. It started with just Polish artists, our last release was successful and loads of djs played it. After that we’ve started to grow a lot, and every release has had really good feedback. It’s good on our label because we can do whatever we want, but our relationship with Mothership is really good and they are like our family. We didn’t know what to expect when we signed with them but they were really easy going and liked all the stuff we were doing. We just released an EP and played the beach in Barcelona at Sonar for The Get Phyical party for like thousands of people.

What other artists are you feeling at the moment?
There are loads of good Polish artists like SLG, loads of them are listed on our labels website. (http://www.mothershipmusic.com/)  We are also playing loads of different types of music, but one of my favourites is Ramadanman, and we also may be working with Kink.

What’s the weirdest place you guys have played in?
We played a really weird festival a couple of years ago, it was in the middle of the jungle, it looked like Rambo. No matter how famous you are you can’t always count on the crowd, venue or promoter for a good party.

You’re playing in London next month for Select Elect, what are your views on London?
In London people like things a lot more funky and soulful, compared to Berlin where we play stuff with less vocals. We play everything from Disco, Techno to Dubstep in London and the crowd loves it, we really like playing here. After playing Fabric a few months ago we got contacted by the manager of Kings of Leon to do a remix for them.

If you guys were on a desert island and could take 3 famous people with you, who wold they be and why?
We would take Prince because we’ve never met him and would love to talk to him. I don’t know who I would take but it would be someone who could make a meal from nothing, like a famous chef, maybe like Jamie Oliver. I’d probably take Kate Moss so we can party as well.
