DistantStarr- The Vibe EP

The latest EP from NYC rapper Donnell Jones, aka DistantStarr showcases 6 tracks of classic sounding hip-hop that draws influence from jazz, soul, funk with a sprinkling of electro too. Teaming up with beat-king Hudson Mohawke, the opening track entitled ‘Feste’ is certainly a highlight of the EP, where a Dilla-esque beat full of bouncing piano riffs plays backing to some inspirational verses and catchy hooks from Donnell that sets the vibe for the rest of the EP.
The uplifting, summery tone is carried through the next 4 tracks where DistantStarr celebrates the enduring qualities of classic hip hop. Donnell remains remarkably grounded throughout this EP, as demonstrated in the reflective lyrics of ‘A Little Starr’ and the self-produced ‘Smooth’, where he reiterates some fundamental morals in combination with rhymes full of motivation. ‘You’re more than just a black kid from the hood’ goes one lyric, underlining the uplifting and hopeful energy that drives this EP home.
