John Holt was born on 11 July 1947, in the Greenwich Farm area of Jamaica. During the 1960s the reggae star’s career blew up as the lead singer of The Paragons. The group’s best known songs include The Tide Is High, Wear You to the Ball and Blackbirds Singing. The Tide Is High was covered by the likes of Blondie and Gregory Isaacs. John left the group in 1970 to pursue a solo career where he went on to release the biggest selling Jamaican record of 1972, Stick By Me (produced by Bunny Lee). His last solo album was released in 1993 and was entitled Peacemaker.
At 2:40am BST time John died. The singer passed away in a London hospital, however, the cause of death has not yet been ascertained. Renowned for his relaxed and more romantic stamp on the reggae genre, the legend will be sorely missed.
Rest in Peace John. Your legacy lives on.
