Beyoncé “I’m bored”
Friday the 13th may not be a day you wish to perform or execute tasks of great importance, mainly as a precaution to reduce your potential quota of bad luck before Christmas. However, if you’re a famed musical monarch, Friday the 13th is simply another day.
On this day Beyoncé Knowles released her fifth solo and visual, self-entitled album – Beyoncé. This album transcends the cultural kaleidoscope with 14 gritty tracks and 14 equally as deeply refined videos. If you’re short on Christmas gift ideas, there is no doubt this will earn bigger portions Christmas dinner.
Without the customary big budget marketing and promotion, Beyoncé went on sale unarmed via ITunes and broke the store record by selling 896,000 copies within the first 3 hours which has now exceeded over 1 million copies sold within the last 6 days. The sensation that is Beyoncé is evidently too excessively popular for market laws or technicalities. Her reasoning for this unconventional and rebellious course of action? Simply disinterest. "I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There's so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn't want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it's ready and from me to my fans." Her legions certainly heard the message and this album is undoubtedly top pick for next year’s music awards. She is a phenomenon that cannot be ignored and she knows it..
How does a global superstar of this magnitude keep her album a secret? Billboard reports, the release was secretly codenamed project ‘Lily’ and operation ‘TNO’ (Tell No one) , with information only given to iTunes executives days before the release with close friends including makeup artists unaware of the planned announcement.
As the world is slowly calming from this shock release, we have the chance to listen to the album that oozes with the nostalgia of her sophomore album; in the way that it is a new and fresh. She is still packing the confidence that many artists can only achieve with their initial release. With the instantly recognisable sinister beats of Timbaland, this is genuine rnb and hip hop. What adds to the mystique of this album is the video clips for each track which certify her relevancy.
This album glimpses modern day sex culture, drink culture and lest we forget the feminist streak she traditionally asserts in every album. This trademark is cleverly layered over ‘Flawless’ featuring Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie who emphasises it. This is not just another Beyoncé album, her sound is liberated through the videography. She is parading her love for Jay Z who features in the first single ‘Drunk in Love’ With lyrics such as “I’ve been drinking” and “Daddy I want you”, she even appears drunk. , This is an elevated and honest take on Beyoncé’s personality. This is the reason she has 53 million Facebook fans and 8 million Instagram followers.
The album includes collaborations with Drake, Frank Ocean, Timbaland, Jay Z and even her daughter Blue Ivy. Beyoncé shows she’s still got it!
