Fink Meets The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

Fink - the recording and touring trio fronted by Fin Greenall. You may recognise their music from various TV shows and movies including Greek, Dear John, CSI:NY and House but what should really be recognised, is their raw talent and tirelessly creative substance. Greenall has also written in collaboration with John Legend, Professor Green and he even co-wrote material beside Amy Winehouse. Fink brings a version of 21st century blues with dub and ambience thrown into the mix. I have held Fink's music close to me for a long time now, but was lucky enough to get tickets on behalf of The Guestlist Network to review their one-off screening of Fink Meets The Royal Concertgebouw.
In April 2012 Fink played for the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for their Queen's night concert. Their music was rearranged by composer and orchestrator Jules Buckley and their music became more emotive and vast than ever before – like a new piece of art. The concert wasn't intended to be shown to an audience but on Thursday 24th October Fink screened Fink Meets The Royal Concertgebouw at the Everyman Screen on The Green, a single screen cinema in Islington. The comfortable sofa seating and waiting service added to the exclusivity of the night, which was made even more surreal by Fin Greenall's casual appearance in the third row. “Does he really want to sit with us commoners?” I thought to myself, but perhaps watching yourself on the big screen is made easier when you have your fans sitting and watching with you.
“Berlin Sunrise” was a fiery start to the evening with the RCO, a previously emotive, acoustic track was suddenly enriched, effortlessly by orchestral crescendos. The swirling back drop of the orchestra continued throughout, making the night an emotional and stimulating experience for all. Ninja Tune released the staggering results of the combination of Fink meets the RCO to buy physically on CD and LP and to own digitally on 14th October 2013. “What power art thou” was accompanied by Fin's elegant voice and the RCO had the chance to really show-off their orchestral abilities on “The Infernal Machine” by Rouse and “The Unanswered Question” by Ives. The screening of their performance was a special occasion – you could tell it was an emotional and stimulating experience for all – and a great way to test the classical waters that we may have not been familiar with.
The power of Fink's songwriting with the orchestra was like a new piece of art – string interventions and ever-passionate words filled the room and you could just imagine the great sense of achievement that Fink felt, as they were handed flowers on stage at the finale of the evening. “Sort of Revolution” ended the evening's music on an effortlessly elegant and strongly crafted wall of sound from both the Royal Concertgebouw and Fink.
If they haven't already, Fink will the hearts and minds of thousands more of you with their venture into the classical music genre. The emotional power at play made for really, really excellent music. Quite simply, I would put them as the band of the day, each and every day if I could. This is the thing.
