For those of you who have never heard of Fair to Midland imagine System of A Down with marginally less crazy but all the slow melodies, sudden drops and heavy guitar you’d expect. Plus there’s a banjo! It makes for wonderful stuff, and the similarity is no surprise, the band’s last record label was Serjical Strike, belonging to Serj Tankian of System of a Down fame. Since we’re name dropping we may as well also mention that the record has been produced by Joe Barresi, best known for his work with Queens of the Stone Age and Coheed and Cambria. So all the credits are right but how is the sound? This Prog-Rock band have been known to produce some genre defying sounds but this time they’ve warned their work is heavier and darker than ever before. The results are great, the sound is raw, energetic and cynical but nonetheless musically skillful and a real treat to listen to.
