Lotic forms outsider R&B in Heterocetera House | Wednesday 17th February 2016 | Cristina Berlin Zomby Lotic Heterocetera Texas Austin J'Kerian Morgan Tri Angle Records Arca After moving from Texas to Berlin in 2012, Lotic’s career really got moving. J’Kerian Morgan, aka Lotic, studied computer music and composition in Austin but flourished in the continent’s progressive, creative environment, releasing two EPs on Sci-Fi & Fantasy before the release of 2015’s Heterocetera. You can hear the conflict between Berlin’s minimalist approach and Lotic’s more diverse array of influences in Heterocetera, a 5 track EP which processes and celebrates Lotic’s outsider status. Ambient, ethereal and jarring enough to fit into Tri Angle Records’ back catalogue neatly, the release courts the dancefloor as well. ‘Heterocetera’ is shipwrecked R&B with ghostly dancehall rhythms and aggressive vocal samples held together by trap snares. ‘Slay’ works in similar ways, recalling Arca and Holy Other. ‘Underneath’ is a spooky highlight, evoking recent Zomby and bass trends of the UK. Spanning the traditionally black and masculine - R&B and grime, and the traditionally white and androgynous - leftfield electronica, the release has an understanding of what it’s like to be excluded from every angle and torn in different directions.
