Get some Air! Clapham Common Skatepark

Other | Wednesday 4th September 2013 | kimzung

Today I went on location to Clapham Common to take a look at the newly improved skate and basketball park.
The sun was shining and the concrete was hot. There was a gold n shiny hot looking bmx bike pulling some smart little tricks off the rails, smacking out some beats off the back wheel. Plenty of little kids on scooters running amuck everywhere, whilst the bigger riders on their skateboards were flying off the half pipe grabbing some air. The sunshine was cranking up the heat but the atmosphere was relaxed with young and old kids and families all hanging out around the spacious park. The roller bladders taking it easy with the skareboarders and bmx riders. There were definitely some talented boys showing off their skills today in the blazing sunshine but also plenty of amateurs trying out new moves and tricks and messing around on their 2, 3 and 4 wheeled toys.

The cafe adjacent to the park has also got a new look with a deck facing into the park so you can watch the action or an enclosed one at the back so you can relax, though the road runs right alongside it, it was still pretty cosy today. The guys who run the eaterie are friendly enough but don't expect speedy service. The menu's got all the usual stuff you could ask for like burger, chips, can drinks and ice-creams. They also make delicious thick milkshakes with a list of choices like aero, kitkat, bounty, etc, for you to flavour it up with. The creamy eye popping pistachio cake, coconut, carrot and other homemade goodies were very tempting too at only £2.50 a slice.

Once I'd had my fill, I took my ball into the basket ball park. The midafternoon sun had most of the players resting out in the shade but there were a few out shooting hoops or playing 1 on 1. Another spacious area, there are plenty of hoops set up around the place and plenty of space for private practice or group games. I was no match for the teams out on court today but everyone just seem to be taking it easy and having a good time. The whole fenced in area has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Bring your board or bmx and just come hang out and learn new tricks or smooth out some old moves that need cleaning up. Try working on your dribble and dunk over on the basketball courts or just take a time out in the cafe and marvel at how the pro's do it. So if you're having a bad day, go get some fresh air, get some sun, smack out some badass moves and fly as high as you can soar, there's nothing like that combination to make you feel on top of the world again.
