The Drums' Newest Track 'Blood Under Your Belt' Will Have You Reminiscing

Indie | Sunday 9th April 2017 | Rachel

The Drums have revived themselves with their first addition since their third album Encyclopaedia, back in 2014.

The indie-pop New Yorkers rose to fame with their simply self titled debut album The Drums, with singles like 'Lets Go Surfing', 'Book Of Stories' and 'Best Friend' gathering the most recognition for their clink and chiming sound of undressed yet upbeat melodies.

Since then The Drums have perfected their optimistic surf-rock style, infused with conflicting bleaker subject matter, as this direction tends to be the back bone to each track they have ever conceived.

Death and lost love amongst other desolate lyrics are often prime choice for Jonny Pierce, and are what accompany the most lively beats in their ever contrasting creations.

'Blood Under My Belt', the first contribution from The Drums soon to be released fourth album Abysmal Thoughts, does little to deviate from this well tread path. For this reason, it is instantly lovable for its abilty to be immediatly recognisable.

The song is layered with the sweet, tinkering style of Pierce's reassuring lyrics, that we have often heard in the past; 'Yes It's true, that I hurt you, but I still love you, I still do'. these lyrics able to resonate with any listener, but also repeat The Drums' habit of always approaching lyrics in an incredibly bare and potent manner. A style they own and reproduce with familair ease.

Jonny Pierce, the last original member of The Drums, wrote, recorded and played every lyric and instrument to be heard on the 12 track LP.

He has succeeded in striding forward alone, with the sentimental flavour of The Smiths and the enthusiastic rhythm of The beach Boys that still oozes from his most recent efforts.

Abysmal Thoughts is due to be dropped June 16th, as well as taking on a British tour this coming October, kicking off their shows in Manchester on the 4th of October at Gorilla.
