My Digital Enemy have been on the UK club scene’s radar for quite a while now – for 3 years they have lit up sets by mainstream DJs like Annie Mac and Pete Tong, getting ever huger. Their recent collaborations with Tink and MNEK are testament to the originality of their bass heavy house. We swapped some words with the Brighton duo to get into their heads.
So at what age did you guys start making music and what fed your desire to become artists?
We both started making music when we were 15-16 but started making proper dance music when we were around 24-25. I suppose the desire to start producing came from going to raves and clubs and seeing how the music got people moving. We wanted to become part of it and watch the crowd bounce to our music!
The new single 'Clocks' has a strong American crossover sound. Is this the sound you were going for from the start? Was this what you envisioned pre-production?
We wrote the track around the vocal and wanted to go down the bass heavy tech house route which is the vibe we love playing at the moment. We thought it would be a nice contrast with a semi commercial hip hop vocal to have a dirty bass house back beat.
In light of ongoing negative criticism for certain dance music subgenres, where do you guys feel My Digital Enemy fit in the stratosphere of genre collaboration and mash up?
We’d say housey techy baseline!
How did you end up reworking Tink aka Trinty Home’s original track ‘Around the Clock’? Did you guys get to work face to face with her at all, and can we look forward to future collaborations?
We got the vocal through our publisher Chris Sills as he has been working closely with Ole publishing in LA and they had got it from Timbaland. As mentioned earlier, we worked the track around it and then did some mad editing with it too! As for future collaborations we would be down for that 100% -watch this space ;-)
Considering the importance of travel in the career of a musician, what is your opinion on Brexit and the possible impact it may have on artists and the English music industry?
We don’t think it will change much at all to be honest - we can’t see it affecting anyone in the near future!
How do you guys feel about the current closure of Fabric?
It’s sad to see so many clubs go in London but it’s best to look to the future and focus on what we can do to improve the clubbing scene.
With the name My Digital Enemy, do you guys champion analogue and vinyl or is there another meaning to the name and brand you have created?
The name came around when digital MP3’s seemed to be killing the industry. Vinyls were dying out and a lot of labels were going bust because of it. But to be honest, everything we play is in digital format now, and so is our record label Zulu records -so we should be called My Digital Friend! Lol
In light of the recent success of your own imprint's Zulu and Vudu Records, will the direction of your labels focus more on the underground or push towards a more mainstream sound?
We always will keep Zulu and Vudu underground and leave the commercial stuff to the Majors ;-)
Finally, what plans do you guys have for the future?
We have signed our new track ‘Inside Of Me’ with vocals written by MNEK to Insomniac records - so that will be the next thing on the cards! That, plus world domination! Hahaha
