Jamaican duo Equiknoxx released Bird Sound Power last month on DDS, and it’s the freshest, most potent thing dancehall has seen since Major Lazer’s Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do. Anyone that got the crossover appeal of early Major Lazer – and considering even Beyoncé sampled it, I’m willing to say that’s a lot of people - will understand what Equiknoxx are up to.
This underground dancehall is destined for greatness. It’s far more likely to please continental, British or American fans of forward-thinking electronic music than it is to please listeners of mainstream dancehall, but at its peaks, like the huge tune ‘Last of the Mohicans’, which recalls the endlessly versatile trap of TNGHT, it has truly pandemic potential.
Having made music together for over 8 years, Galvsborg and Bobby Blackbird, AKA Equiknoxx, have got more than a few tricks up their sleeve as producers. The innovative dancehall squad use psychedelic bird calls to identify their tracks, nodding to dub sounds, along with heavy hip hop drums. Without a heavy international tour schedule, they’ve already worked with veteran artists like Beenie Man and Busy Signal –sky’s the limit.
