Teklife is a name which is slowly becoming recognised around the world as a unique label in electronic music, representing the genre known as Footwork in Chicago, it's place of origin, and beyond.
The crew which started out as Ghettotechnicianz and reformed as Teklife in 2010 have released Afterlife as their first album, and what an album. Drawing from collaborations between the late Dj Rashad and other Teklife members, it busts out tune after tune, including classic footwork and experimental beats.
‘Come Close’, by Dj Rashad and Dj Phil, is chilled and graceful, referencing UK sounds like garage, whilst other tracks are more in debt to the ghetto tech that so heavily influenced the formation of footwork.
It is fitting that the label’s first release is a retrospective homage to label founder and footwork pioneer Dj Rashad, who tragically passed away in 2014. Rest in peace Rashad and roll on Teklife.
