Welcome to the (un)official MOBO Awards! To mark the 20th birthday of the ceremony, it's time to do some awarding of our own. The atmosphere in Leeds was absolutely electric; screaming crowds reacted louder to the name of their own city than the actual acts themselves.
It was an epic night with well-deserved winners and some huge performances, following in the footsteps of the greats such as Tina Turner, Amy Winehouse, P Diddy...and JLS. However, the magic of these awards lies in the fact that it’s not only musicians being recognised for their contribution and inspiration, there were some truly remarkable people presenting these awards as well as well as musical talent.
Here are Guestlist's Award Winners:
Best Performance: FKA Twigs, and no, not (just) because she brought Robert Pattinson with her. Even though there was fire, explosions, twerking and rising platforms in some of the other incredible performances, the choreography for her performance was intricate and a style that I have never seen before and was incredibly impressed with.
It made it all the more special with her humbled acceptance speech for ‘Best Video’ with ‘Pendulum’ which revealed her to be one of the sweetest artists in the room. In fact, all of the acceptance speeches were touching, even though a lot of these acts had won these awards a few times previously, they were all so shocked and humbled for winning and all thanked both God and their Mothers in their speeches which I thought was just adorable.
Best Lyrics Award: Lethal ‘2 2 chicken, nando’ Bizzle - the opener of the show, I hope no one missed him because the kettle was taking too long to boil - DENCH.
Best Hair-Whip award: Rita Ora who stole the show with her sassy performance, and of course her exceptional whipping technique with that impressively high pony-tail.
Best Hip-Hop Cameo award: Hip-Hop legend Fatman Scoop - who is the reason I started listening to the genre - made an unexpected appearance which made everyone drop.
Best Dressed award: CeeLo Green, who headlined the awards, sporting an elegant Jesus-like golden MuuMuu.
Best Swag: Idris Elba - the man who, if he did become the next Bond, would certainly do for the UK what Obama has done for America!
Best Living Metaphor award: David Haye, as in the champion of the so dubbed ‘David and Goliath’ boxing match - a match in which the outcome is now a living, walking metaphor for the triumph of the black minorities.
Best Unintentional Inspiration award: Nadiya Hussain, one of the most wonderful Great British Bake Off winners of all time, she clearly does not try to be inspirational at all - she just loves to bake (no people - not in that way)! Which, in turn, makes her even more charming and inspirational.
Philanthropic award: The awe-inspiring founder of the MOBOs herself, Kanya King blessed us with her presence, who has done exceptional work for both women and black people in this country, outside the MoBos as well as in.
Best Memory award: By far the highlight of the night was the honouring of Sir Lenny Henry, who in turn went on to honour everyone else in the world with his fittingly lyrical spiel of names which lasted exactly two minutes. The noise from the audience grew with every name and every minute, partly due to how impressed we were at how he was remembering all those names!
The crowd started going nuts even before his own name was mentioned, as everyone was slowly working out the subtle clues surrounding who was to be given the Paving The Way award. His shout out to Howard Brown, the guy from the Halifax adverts, was the tip of the iceberg and reminded us all why he is one of our most treasured comedians.
Taking something so important and meaningful and throwing in some perfectly timed comedy made the speech absolutely epic and unforgettable. He is a national treasure and his speech reminded us, in every way, exactly why. Well done, Sir.
Congratulations to all the winners! What an amazing night! So much fun, infectious vibes and music as well as absolutely well deserved celebration of some unforgettable talent. Finally, of course a huge shout out to First Direct for making this night possible!
