Vivienne Westwood shows YOU how to save the Arctic

Other | Friday 17th July 2015 | Federica

Most of us will probably never visit the Arctic in person, but it's important to all of us. The fact that the sun doesn't roast us is basically down to the Arctic. Here’s how it works: the ice reflects the sun’s rays and thus prevents the temperature from getting too high. The more the ice melts, the more the resulting water absorbs the warmth and heats the whole planet. With the temperature getting high, a lot of damage is done, and it affects all of us.

The problem is also about wildlife and locals. Unique species live on the Arctic, all of them depending on sea ice to survive, and most of which are endangered. Local people, who depend on the environment for food and resources, are very worried about their own subsistence.

The real problem though, is that some of us think we are actually benefitting from the ice melting. Oil can be found under the ice, so while the melting ice is jeopardising the very existence of both animals and humans, a lot of worldwide companies are running to the Arctic in order to seize the emerging oil.

A shared effort is needed to turn the situation around, and everyone must take action to save the Arctic and save the planet from becoming unlivable for the future generations.

Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood has just launched a t-shirt collection based on the Greenpeace campaign Save the Arctic.

Dozens of celebrities modelled for the campaign, and their giant photos have been hung near the biggest oil companies’ sites, the first one being Shell near the Waterloo Underground station in London. Westwood’s t-shirts are made from pure cotton, and have already been bought by 7 million people.

Greenpeace has also launched a petition to President Obama in order to stop the Arctic drilling.

Whether we prefer to buy a t-shirt, or to sign an online petition, one thing is for sure: all of us must take action to take care of the planet.
