Tyler The Creator to launch new social media network

Other | Wednesday 11th March 2015 | Serena

Launching the announcement at Code Media 2015, Tyler, 23, answered questions with his venture partner Lloyd Braun, owner of tech company Whalerock Industries and former executive at Yahoo! and ABC. Tyler envisions a portal rivalling MTV and Cartoon Network, where you cut out the conventional social media or TV 'middle men' and have your own branded network.

He states, "My generation is the Internet. That's all we know, it controls our lives. You guys got these graphs, studying stuff you're studying us so you can keep your jobs. Let's cut out the middleman, the cable companies."d

This 'channel', which he intends to reach out to Kim Kardashian and Howard Stern with, can overstep traditional media and social medial platforms to reach fans on his terms. “It’s my vision,” Tyler said explaining Braun’s involvement on the back end. His company will handle marketing, ad-sales, technological design, and other tasks behind the scenes. “He’s still there to deal with the stuff I don’t wanna deal with,” added Tyler.

Whalerock will take a portion of the revenue amassed through the network, although the specifics are unclear.

In the future the company may integrate bundle packages offered to subscribers through cable, or the likes of Apple TV. Tyler however isn’t sure that he’ll be getting paid, and he doesn’t really care. "It's not about the money for me. I wanted my own network. I wanted to do something cool. It's always about me doing something that I think is awesome."

Could Tyler be leaping into unknown territory or is this indeed the future of personal promotion? Let us know your thoughts.
