Ain’t No Love – rappers Roland “1990” Broere and Elias “Beanz” McBean, and singer Saidah Conrad – blend hip-hop, electronic beats and smooth R&B vocals to create unique and original music. It’s not hard, quick-fire spitting but driving basslines and strong synth beats add a different kind of power to the rhymes.
Their sound was formed in the clubs and on the streets of Montreal, and the group’s appeal has expanded from their hometown thanks to their notoriously high-energy live shows. The group’s live talents have led them to share the stage with artists such as Iggy Azalea, Steve Aoki, Redman and Calvin Harris. They’ve played industry showcases like SXSW and have been featured n MTV, Billboard and Majestic Casual.
Plummet perfectly encompasses this energy and these strong six tracks are a great statement of Ain’t No Love’s philosophy. Title track ‘Plummet’ begins with Saidah’s morphed vocals before chiming synths and booming trap drums fire the track into life. It’s a powerful intro to the EP and just begs to be turned up loud. The drug-driven lyrics showcase Ain’t No Love’s fearlessness – the band embrace rather than shy away from the taboo. ‘Pussy Down’ demonstrates this boldness as they flip the standard expectations of hip-hop on their head.
The simple hook on ‘High Right Now’ is a serious earworm and the track is expertly layered with beats, Saidah’s silky vocals, and Beanz and 1990’s bars. ‘Summa’, which premiered on Earmilk before the video debuted on Complex and Noisey, is another highlight. Producer and fellow Canadian Birthday Boy said the idea was “to blend house and R&B, do it a bit up-tempo then switch to half time for the verses”, and The 405 deemed it “accomplished and infectious”. It certainly has a hands-in-the-air, rooftop party kind of vibe.
With the help of expert producers like Avenue, Rich Kidd, Nightizm and Cam Bluff, Ain’t No Love have created an effortless blend of house, electronica and hip-hop. With the danceability of club music and the lyrical quality of great rap, the EP manages to be radio-friendly whilst retaining underground appeal.
