On the Edge of Controversy: Fuck Taboo Exhibition

Monday 18th February 2013 | Radka

This is a story of how Camera 16 managed to make people blush. Again.

They say that great success lies on the edge of controversy. Camera 16 (or Room 16) is a Contemporary Art Gallery in Milan, Italy, that from 31st January until 30th March 2013 proudly presents an exhibition delicately named Fuck Taboo. The exhibition features international artists exposing iconic images representing homosexuality from both aesthetic and existential angles.

By revealing a massively intimate grip of artists’ work, we can sneak into the world of homosexuality- culturally challenged and socially criticised. Displayed photographs reflect on the gay iconography with a bitterness of so-much-needed acceptance. The exhibition not only bursts with emotions, thoughts and feelings, but also slaps you with its rawness and crude nudity.

The exhibition, curated by Carlo Madesani, mirrors works of these artists:  Gianpaolo Barbieri, Jacopo Benassi, Lisetta Carmi, Larry Clark, Lovett/Codagnone, Marta Dell'angelo, Neal Fox, Daniele Galliano, Fausto Gilberti, Paolo Gonzato, Kenny Kenny, Kings, Nicola Guiducci, Noritoshi Hirakawa, Bruce LaBruce, Federico Luger, Yasumasa Morimura, Zanele Muholi, Fabio Paleari, Giuseppe Stampone and Wolfgang Tillmans.

Fuck Taboo may be perceived as unacceptable by the critical sight of a mundane viewer. However, there is a secret on the other side of the coin- a daring, opinionated beauty presenting our sexualised world. At the end of the day, it is just a naked human body presented in an nontraditional manner that faces the public eye.

If you are planning a trip to Italy in upcoming weeks, definitely give it a go! Do not forget to keep your mouth closed.
