No Doubt not looking so hot anymore
Monday 5th November 2012 | David
The latest video from the band has been removed after just one day due to the offensive portrayal of Native Americans.
No Doubt surprised fans yesterday with the video for ‘Looking Hot’, the second single taken from Push and Shove, their first album in 11 years. However, the band has removed the video following quite the backlash from critics concerning their use of Native American symbolism.
The band themselves are a multi-cultural unit, and are more well known for speaking out against racism, so this latest update rather flies in the face of their latest slip-up. The video was so short-lived that I didn’t even get a chance to see it. However, many others did and one fan of No doubt posted an open letter on their forum, stating her disappointment at their “trivialisation of [her] culture”.
The California-based group have apologised unreservedly in response to the less than favourable reviews of the video. In a recent statement, they wrote that “Our intention with our new video was never to offend, hurt or trivialize Native American people, their culture or their history. Although we consulted with Native American friends and Native American studies experts at the University of California, we realize now that we have offended people. This is of great concern to us”.
It smells a bit of damage limitation and the band has made sure people know they did their research before making the video. It doesn’t seem to have helped them much. No doubt (see what I did there?) they will be trying their hardest to appease their fans with any future offerings.
Since we can't see the video for 'Looking Hot', check out 'Settle Down', another song from the album.
