The Guestlist Network Recommends: BassLaced Events

Wednesday 17th October 2012 | Tiffany

If you haven’t heard of them already, make sure you read up on some of London and Nottingham’s most exciting nights out...

Founded in Nottingham in May 2008 by Tom Edgar, events company BassLaced has experienced and created huge success in the events market.  With humble beginnings at the 250 capacity Bodega Social Club in Nottingham, in 2010 BassLaced decided to step it up a notch, and moved to their current home, Stealth, dubbed the Midland’s ‘clubbing institution’, a ‘musical mecca for dance fans’.  With such a big venue under their belt, in 2011 the BassLaced team (thankfully) decided that it was time to take the next step and rock the club scene in London.  A manic night at Cable in London was not only a huge success, but a sign of things that were to come, and still are to come.  BassLaced now reaches thousands of fans at its regular location, Stealth Nottingham, which boasts a massive capacity of 700 people.  Having had a joyful reign at the 1000 person capacity Cable London venue, BassLaced seeks to branch out more in the capital, and the future is set to see events in different locations across London.

BassLaced are serious about their music, and their nights regularly feature the hottest international artists from the Drum and Bass scene, as well as other artists belonging to a fusion of various music genres such as Dubstep, Trap, Electro and more.  Hosting 1-2 events a month, BassLaced line-ups (future and present) feature a roster of artists guaranteed to make any bass-lover’s jaw hit the floor.  From Flux Pavillion to Flosstradamus, Dub Phizix to Benga, Shy FX to Plastician and many more, a night out with BassLaced will always be an unforgettable one.

The Guestlist Network caught up with BassLaced’s Tom Edgar to find out what’s behind it all...

What have been BassLaced’s best achievements to date?

Trying not to do one genre.  I think that doing different genres is what I’ve worked hardest on.  Not to be seen as ‘this type’ of night or ‘that type’ of night, but being able to move between all of the different genres (Drum and Bass, House, Dubstep etc.).

What/who are you most excited about for the end of 2012/next year?

I think that I’m most excited about the meeting with Shy FX and the Digital Soundboy camp.  We’re going to be doing a small Christmas Party on the 20th December, in a 300 person capacity venue in East London.  It’s only going to be for friends and family, and we’re going to do a bit of a raffle for some free tickets to outside customers.  The whole event is going to be free; anyone who wants to come down can apply for tickets but there’ll be a limited number on offer.  The venue that we’re using is really small but it’s got a wicked sound system in there, really well located, I really like the venue.  Those guys [Shy FX and Digital Soundboy] are really excited about it and so am I.  The big raves are cool, but I think that’ll be one where’ll I’ll have loads of my friends down there; there’ll be a lot of people I know, so for me personally, that’s probably the event which I’m most excited about.   I think it’ll be a really good party for anyone that gets to come.

What would, in your opinion, has been the most enjoyable or the best BassLaced event to date?

November last year, in London at Cable.  The line-up was Shy FX, DJ EZ, Redlight and others.  It was just a really wicked event, really busy.  I really liked the line-up and everyone played wicked sets, so I think for me that was the best night, where I really enjoyed the music and the vibe.

Who have you been the most in awe of that you've had at a BassLaced event?  Ever been starstruck by someone playing at one of the BassLaced nights?

In the early days to be honest, pretty much every DJ who I met – I was pretty much in awe of when we first started.  There were a lot of my mates who would come back home after the event, like “I can’t be believe it, I spoke to so and so”, and then we’d ring them up and try and book them.  We’d be a bit nervous before even picking up the phone.  Now, they’re friends – it was the likes of N-Type, Youngster, Plastician... all of those guys who we started off booking, I was just a bit nervous and a bit in awe of them.  But nowadays, there’s not really too many people that I’m nervous about.  Once you get to know a few of the ‘bigger’ people you realise that, you know, everyone has to eat, everyone has to go to the toilet, everyone has to do the same stuff that you have to do.  I met Maverick Sabre the other day, I really really like his music, I’m a big fan.  I spent some time with him and he’s really sound.  I wasn’t really in awe, but I met him and I didn’t realise that he was Maverick Sabre at first.  I was chatting to him for quite a while, and he was obviously talking about his music, and I asked him what his recording name was, and he said “Maverick Sabre”.  I think when he said that, I was a little bit like ‘Oh sh*t!’  I wasn’t nervous but I was like ‘I’ve just been chatting to Maverick Sabre!’

What artist/what song is the most played in your iTunes right now?

Baauer – Harlem Shake  [good choice Tom!]

Have you ever wanted to be a music artist yourself?

When I was 18/19 I did.  I wanted to be a DJ.  But now, it seems really high-pressured, I wouldn’t really want to do it to be honest.  I think every teenager wants to be a DJ, but nowadays not really!

Your next London event is at The Nest - is this now your regular London venue?

The next one is a little Trap night with Flosstradamus.  I think there’s a lot of hype around Flosstradamus at the moment.  That’s a one off, The Nest is a really good venue that I’m personally a fan of.  We wanted to do a small thing, just to get my toe in the water and see how Trap is going in London.  I think we’re just going to move around venues and use different venues for whatever nights it may be.  Some warehouse stuff, some club stuff, some small stuff, some big stuff, kinda just mix and match depending on the nature of the event that we’re putting on.

What would you say to someone who's never been to a BassLaced night before and doesn't know what to expect?

Get your rave-socks on!  It’s all about partying and having fun, leave the attitude at home – it’s a fun night.
