Pussy Riot Appeal Successful(ish)

Wednesday 10th October 2012 | Jacob

Yekaterina Samutsevich walks free with her conviction overturned.

Sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted for “hooliganism incited by religious hatred” for staging a 'punk prayer' in a Russian Orthodox church, things were not looking to rosy for Samutsevich. But after a successful appeal she walks free.

This sudden turn of events may not be so exciting for her fellow protesters, who in the same hearing had their appeals quashed and look likely to serve out the rest of their sentences in prison.

Their lawyer vows to continue with the appeal process, stating “we're glad that Yekaterina Samutsevich has been freed, but we think the other two girls should also be released". Perhaps something is lost in translation because if that’s all my lawyer had to say on the subject I’d get busy brushing up on my prison skills: DIY Tattooing for Fun and Profit, Shower Room Etiquette, Shiv Making 101 etc.

To help remind you what kicked this all off, here is the video of the band bothering the clergy whilst wearing tea cosies, a traditional symbol of rebellion in Russia. Maybe.
