New Death Grips Album ‘No Love Deep Web’

Tuesday 9th October 2012 | Jacob

Experimental hip-hop trio keep up the blistering pace of releases, with the second studio album release of this year.

Despite their debut mix-tape Ex-Military and first album The Money Store being unleashed to almost universal critical acclaim, this time around has been more difficult for Death Grips. Their label Epic has postponed the release until next year, forcing the group to self-release No Love Deep Web on file sharing websites. The label hasn’t yet given a reason for the postponement but it may have something to do with the controversial album art. I’ll save you a trip to Google: it’s a dick.

It’s certainly a darker listen than previous material. Gone are the layered samples and hooks from The Money Store, now replaced by stripped down beats that give it a bleak and cold atmosphere. If you’re new to Death Grips this probably isn’t the most accessible listening experience. That’s not to say it’s not a worthwhile one however, the vocals are still razor sharp and the beats are harder than ever.

In a recent announcement, the group explained their move in sound:  “material is cold, bass heavy , minimal , rock & roll influenced and could simultaneously fit into a rave or dance club context”. It certainly feels geared towards live performance, so don’t miss your chance to catch them at Camden’s Electric Ballroom on 7th November.
