Bringing back the synths with Chvrches

They only debuted live in July of this year, but the indie/electro-pop outfit from Scotland are already ringing people’s bells.
The second single from Glaswegian trio Chvrches (pronounced “churches”) has been released on the band’s Soundcloud, and for a group fresh off the block, it’s sounding pretty tight. Reminiscent of The Naked And Famous at times, but possibly with a more natural vocal display, ‘The Mother We Share’ could well spark new interest in electro-pop. The band already sounds extremely professional live – seen here performing their first single, ‘Lies’ in their home city – despite their youth as an established group, which certainly bodes well for the future.
Heavy on the synthesisers, played by Iain Cook and Martin Doherty, and big on the drums, the instrumentals on ‘The Mother We Share’ are complemented wonderfully by vocalist Lauren Mayberry’s striking voice, which lends itself very well to catchy hooks which should get crowds joining in with ease. The synths are tempered by softer keyboard tones, giving the song a less industrial sound than ‘Lies’. A video has also been made – very recently – to go with the track, strangely depicting what seems to be an abandoned baby wandering about, and eventually being found by a man out hunting. It seems to end hopefully enough, tying in nicely with a song that manages to sound both upbeat and sorrowful in varying places. Innovative and polished, hopefully Chvrches will be able to break into the big time before long.
‘The Mother We Share’ is due to be released on 5th November this year.
