The man who killed John Lennon has a parole meeting scheduled for later this week.
Mark David Chapman shot and killed the former Beatle on December 8th 1980 and was ordered to serve a 20 year-life imprisonment term.
Having currently served 32 years in Wende Correction Facility, New York, Chapman has been refused parole 6 times and this week marks his seventh attempt at freedom.
The murder was motivated by a bid to become famous with Chapman claiming that ‘I felt that by killing John Lennon I would become somebody and, instead of that, I became a murderer, and murderers are not somebody’s. Instead of taking my life I took somebody else's, which was unfortunate.’
In recent times McCartney has had the great honour of performing for the Queen’s Jubilee, as well as at the Olympic opening ceremony and it is with some sadness that we are left to wonder how special those events could have been if the two had of been reunited again on stage.
Lennon was not only a talented and gifted musician, the likes of which will probably never be seen again, he was also a true humanitarian, campaigner for peace and political activist. If ever an example existed of a celebrity who was great not only in their field but also simply as a human being, Lennon was it.
As a final ending note for future murderers; if you wish to become famous please can you start targeting the shit pop acts which dominate the charts instead of talented musicians and pioneers.
Thank you.
