Miles Kane at Benicàssim

In the heat and excitement of Benicàssim, it is easy to lose track of time. This explains why my friends and I were sprinting, beers in hand, towards the main stage on Friday night. Our alcohol refueling had overran, and somehow, we were about to miss the start of Miles Kane. This was unthinkable considering how much excitement had surrounded him in the weeks leading up to the festival.
During our highly inebriated and terribly organised road trip around Europe before descending on the Spanish festival, Miles was a common request on the car playlist. The talk on the beach had not only been about what he would play, but also what he would wear. The extremely stylish twenty six year old is well known for his skinny fit suits and has forged friendships with many established and up-and-coming British designers.
“It’s 38 degrees, he surely can’t wear skinny jeans”. He could. Black and white leopard print ones to be precise. We had arrived half way through opening number ‘Rearrange’, and had already managed push ourselves towards the front so that we were surrounded by fans as excited as we were, albeit a bit more sober. Four songs in, and it was time for something new, ‘First of My Kind’ and ‘Woman’s Touch’ are two songs likely to feature on his upcoming second album, and if they are anything to go by live, it will be a very special album indeed, especially considering that Paul Weller has co-written songs.
The impossibly captivating ‘Quicksand’ really got the crowd going. My friend and I were up on shoulders, much to the enjoyment of Miles who gave us a smile and the trademark Kane-Turner ‘point and look cool’. The song is perfect for festivals and was sandwiched between two covers, Jacques Dutronc’s ‘The Responsible’ and Tom Jones’ ‘Looking Out My Window’. Miles showing that only having one album does not mean you cannot rock the main stage at a festival.
The dreamy ‘Colour Of The Trap’ allowed for a moments fresh air before he plunged into crowd pleasers ‘Inhaler’ and ‘Come Closer’, the latter of which ended with a ten minute “aaah-aaaah, wooo-ooooah” from his adoring fans. My personal highlight of Benicàssim is currently touring festivals in Europe and will hopefully be releasing his new album this coming autumn.
