Last night saw Panda Bear unveiling a new Animal Collective track ‘Today’s Supernatural’ (the first single from the new album Centipede Hz) on the newly launched Animal Collective Radio. After the recent release of the Honeycomb/ Gotham 7 Inch, fans have been left to guess at the sound of the new album. After MMP can they go?…
The thick, wide sound that they had on MMP is still here, the happy-haunting synth sounds hits somewhere around a medieval carnival in downtown New York. Elements of their earlier work shine through, sounds that may have been at home on Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished, they have kept the thick bouncy drum sound of MMP which gives the song a real energy. Somehow, it seems as though this is a rock song, almost like an AC ballad, complete with crashing drums
before a ‘solo’?
‘Today’s Supernatural’ sounds something like a plea for happiness, to remember how things used to be, and try and re-live those times. A song about change and loving and having fun in the face of adversity, to enjoy what you can while you can. Going with your heart and the wild throws of emotions doing that can bring. The song starting with anger and then seeming to relive as it progresses, as though, the changes that have happened can never be solved; only understood. It could be the story of a group of young men that are getting older… Things in their lives unfolding and having more complexity than their younger years?
The song opens straight into Avery Tare, a more visceral tone than fans have been used to in the last LP and releases since. Hankering back to something from Feels. However, as usual, AC have refused to be pinned down, and defined. A constantly moving sound allowed for AC to surprise and awe fans for over 10 years, leaving them a diverse fan base. Some will love and some will hate, and everyone else will do as we have always done… let Animal Collective just wash over us until we understand what we can. Animal collective have always been a journey for me and with the release of ‘Today’s Supernatural’ I am glad my journey is far from over.
