Jessie Ware knows how to write a damn good love song. Her debut album Devotion, which was released in 2012 is a shining example of that, as well as her brilliant collaborations with Sampha (Valentine), Katy B (Aaliyah) and Disclosure (Confess to Me), and it secured her place as one of the most exciting new talents in recent memory.
‘80s pop ballad fans rejoice, because Tough Love is another gorgeous love song marked with Jessie’s signature electronic sound. What’s different about this song, you may ask? Well, Jessie sings in an incredibly high register throughout the song, showing off her quality vocal chords. In an interview with Pitchfork, the singer explained that after restraining her voice on Devotion, she felt more confident on this record. Eat it, Mariah Carey!
The romantic and emotional lyrics paired with the subtle production are truly what make the song. Jessie sings about the idea of longing in a long-distance relationsip, repeating the words ‘that’s called tough love’ and ‘you’ll have me crying out for more’ throughout the track against the swelling sounds of synth and percussion.
It’s smooth, sensual and Jessie Ware all over.
