So an artist commissioned a mural to be made of the Toronto rapper but that’s not the only piece of surprising trivia in his world…
Drake’s not your average rapper but since his friend recently commissioned a mural of him and his friends/family, it has us thinking about other facts about his life that are less than ordinary and not so much common knowledge. Below are just five more surprising of many, many Drake facts.
- An artist from East Grinstead made a mural dedicated to him and his family
Jane Indigo Moore is no stranger to rap portraits, previously being commissioned to make one of 2Pac. However, this is the biggest project she’s worked on – incorporating Drake’s friends and family into an incredibly tasteful painting that features the skyline of the rapper’s birth place, Toronto. The mural includes the recently elusive Lil Wayne, who’s looking more squinty than usual. Drake liked the painting so much that he’s flown it to his LA home.
- He has a cameo in coming of age film Charlie Bartlett
We all know that Drake’s got an acting career behind him starring in the TV series Degrassi, has been a voice actor for Ice Age and has a cameo in Anchorman 2. But he’s tried his hand at some more low-key roles too, starring as a high school student in the 2007 coming-of-age film Charlie Bartlett. He doesn’t deviate from his sad rapper persona though, looking downward in the cubicle and sighing “You called me a loser”.
- Italian food is his favourite cuisine
He’s not much of a fan of actually cooking it for himself but he loves Italian food. Specifically, his favourite restaurant is Sotto Sotto which is in Toronto. He’s so into it that he even admits he’s privately invested in one and wants to own an Italian restaurant someday. His speciality is wine and he knows how to impress, learning all the terminology and where the wine he drinks is made – much to the surprise of experts. He doesn’t just enjoy the finer things though, his favourite fast food is McDonalds.
- Drake’s start from the bottom wasn’t alone
Before getting to rap superstardom, Drake’s first break in music was on a collaborative mixtape with DJ Smallz called Room For Improvement in 2006. Rapping with a lot more ego behind him than he does now, it was a brasher sound and featured skits with Drake’s voicemails on so you’re aware of how great other people think Drake is. DJ Smallz' mixtapes have also featured YMCMB founder Lil Wayne, Ludacris and Juicy J amongst others.
- He’s an incredibly charitable person
Last year, a woman in Ohio sadly lost her family in a house fire and The Game and Drake split a $20,000 donation to help her get her life back. He has also donated a recording studio to one of Philadelphia’s most dangerous schools – Strawberry Mansion High School. His contribution inspired others and since then, their college acceptance rates have doubled. Back in 2010 when he was just rising to fame, he donated $30,000 to build computer schools in Jamaica so he could help the Cassava Piece community in Kingston. For a rapper whose music is often very self-involved, he gives a lot back to the public.
