Album Review: Punk Goes Christmas

Indie | Thursday 7th November 2013 | Gemma

Do you Love Punk Goes Pop? Is Christmas your favourite time of year? Well, consider your day just made, as Fearless Records, home to the Punk Goes Pop series have released a festive version. The album consists of New Found Glory, All Time Low, Real Friends, Man Overboard, The Summer Set, Crown The Empire, Yellowcard, Issues, Jason Lancaster, The Ready Set, Set It Off and William Beckett. Unlike every other Christmas album that’s released this year, ‘Punk Goes Christmas’ consists of original songs bar one, from the bands themselves. On paper this seems like a great idea for an album, however in real life it doesn’t quite translate.

With no stand out hits, this album feels more like a compilation of B sides, which just happens to be themed around Christmas. Don’t get me wrong, the songs aren’t bad, they just lack that umpf power we’re used to hearing from Christmas songs, or even the standard we’re used to expecting from the "Punk Goes..." albums. If I had to choose the best songs on the album I’d go for ‘There will be no Christmas’ by Crown The Empire and ‘This Christmas (I’ll Burn It To The Ground’) by Set It Off.

That being said it’s refreshing to hear new songs rather than the same ones being regurgitated year on year. All in all it’s a good pop-punk album, but a weak album in the Pop Goes franchise.
