Music For The Heart

Other | Wednesday 4th September 2013 | Nyasha

Are you Mariah Carey in the shower but Mariah Scary in real life? Are you told you sing too much? Or are you one of those convinced that you cannot sing? Well this is for you.

Singing is in our makeup, it makes us happy and all of us do it. Whether it’s just ‘Happy Birthday’ or singing along to a song from your favourite artist many of us do it, even those who are adamant that they cannot sing. You’ll soon find them singing along with you to the song playing in a club.

Well studies show that singing is actually good for you both physically and mentally. Singing reduces stress and can make you feel happy and content, but it also works a large amount of muscles in your upper body and increases your blood circulation. It is said that regular singing, that of the choir type, can help to extend your lifespan and boost your motivation and confidence. It also gives hands on experience of why team work and co-operation are important.

Now it’s not compulsory that you join a choir in order to lead a healthy life, but it does have its benefits.  Singing produces endorphins and with the right breathing techniques can give you the same satisfaction as exercise.

It’s not just beneficial to you though, it’s equally as beneficial to your audience. Your audience’s reactions, both good and bad produce those lovely endorphins mentioned earlier. A bad performance on the karaoke machine in the pub or in front of your mates will make them laugh and all in all feel better. This is just the same as an amazing audition or performance that can reduce them to tears and leave them feeling as though a weight has been lifted off their shoulders.

Some of us don’t have the X-Factor when we’re singing on our day to day duties, but have you ever wondered why you’re not a recording artist when you hear the vocals you throw down in the shower? Well most of us do. Your voice sounds better in the shower because there are far more hard surfaces for it to bounce and deflect off of. You also sound louder due to this. No one can stop you when you’re in this zone, leaving the bathroom like you owned it. Everyone can see that you’re now feeling more confident and much better as a stress-free person, until you open your post that is.

So there you have it, singing reduces stress levels and boosts confidence. The next time a friend tells you to shut up because you sound horrendous, tell them that you’re working out and can already see the results!
