Interview with Crazy Town

Best known for their international super hit ‘Butterfly’ Crazy Town have been on a hiatus for around 10 years now. Recently they announced they would be returning to the studio to work on a new album. Guestlist was fortunate enough to catch up with the Bret ‘Epic’ Mazur and Seth ‘Shifty’ Binzer from the band and conduct an interview via email. Check out what they had to say below:
What up guys, glad to hear you are coming back! Has it been hard to reconnect and get back into the swing of things?
Bret: Not at all. Its automatic. We love what we do, so this is something that is fun and exciting.
The album is tentatively titled the ‘Brimstone Sluggers’ what is the reasoning behind this title?
Bret: Seth and I had to bring it back to our roots for this. We were originally "The Brimstone Sluggers". We had to get back to our roots to build it up again.
When can we expect the album to drop and do you have plans to release any promo music videos for the album?
Bret: First single (which will be a free download) should be released with the video in mid-September.
After the phenomenal success you had at the turn of the century do you feel like there is a huge amount of pressure on you to replicate that kind of success with this new record?
Bret: A bit yeah. The most important thing for us is to just make music that we want to make, regardless of expectations. We are just putting one foot in front of the other and not trying to look too far down the road. Living in the moment.
What can fans expect musically from this new album? Is it going to be similar to the old Crazy Town we know and love or will you be switching it up a bit? The last few track you leaked on your MySpace seem to have a lot more of a hip hop/ electronic feel to them, is this the direction that you have decided to take with this album?
Bret: Our roots are in hip hop. We evolve, our fans evolve. I will say that this record is more along the lines of The Gift Of Game. We certainly have always walked the line between genres....which sometimes creates haters, which we have plenty of. People like things neatly stored in a box with a label on it. This is Heavy Metal, that’s Rap, This is Alternative etc...
Will ‘Hit that Switch’ and ‘Hard to Get’ be on Brimstone Sluggers?
Bret: Hit That Switch will be.
Crazy Town has gone through quite a few lineup changes over the years, what is the official lineup at the moment?
Bret: At the moment it’s Me and Seth in the studio, the way we made The Gift of Game...our first record. Still open as to what our lineup will be on tour...
Will you both still be working on your other various side projects and solo careers or is Crazy Town your main priority at the moment?
Bret: CRAZYTOWN is our main priority.
Will you be touring the UK any time in the foreseeable future?
Bret: We certainly hope so! Can’t wait.
On the ‘Gift of Game’ you did a track with KRS ONE which I thought was really cool, do you have any plans to collaborate with any other artists?
Bret: We shall see.
What music are you guys feeling at the moment? Are there any artists at the moment that have really grabbed your attention?
Bret: Nothing honestly sticks out at the moment....We are fans of too many things to mention.
I know Seth, you have had a well-known struggle with drugs and addiction, how do you unwind nowadays? Are you still living the rock n roll lifestyle or have you mellowed out a bit?
Seth: I have really grown up. I put myself, my family and my friends through hell. I am so grateful for my life now. Nowadays I unwind by going to the beach, doing yoga, spending time with good friends and family, eating good food...you know, the real stuff....We have lived enough rock n roll lifestyle.
In all your years in the music industry what is THE craziest experience you have ever had on tour?
Bret: Seriously? Too many to mention. There has been everything from the girls, to the fights, to the many sorted cast of characters straight out of a James Bond movie.
Seth: I will say that the time that I lit out tour bus on fire and we had to leave Ozzfest midway through the tour stands out. Not the greatest of times though.
What about the highlight of your careers so far?
Brett: As a producer I have had the honor and opportunity to work with some amazing artists. Prince for one has to be at the top of my list. I was also producing The Black Eyed Peas and Will I Am humbly still tells everybody that he learned how to produce records from me...that’s pretty cool! But, Seth and I both agree that when we were playing the Rock Im Ring Festival and the huge crowd was singing back our songs to us louder than we could hear ourselves was truly surreal and stands out as a highlight for sure.
