The best is yet to come! Just wait for the Polyvinyl album Carrier, set to be released in August this year, because it is going to blow you away!
Since 2008, the UK has been blessed with the wonderfully eclectic music of America’s The Dodos, when they shared with the international music industry their exceptional breakthrough record, Visiter. San Francisco natives The Dodos is the young indie-rock band that only began jamming together in 2005, and have since released extraordinary music. Meric Long with his gorgeously polished voice and strapping song-writing skills, is combined with the strength of Logan Kroeber’s percussionist talent which he gained throughout his life and experiences being part of the heavy metal music industry. This band has only received positive feedback throughout their careers, never falling below a 7+ rating given by Chicago’s online daily internet publication, Pitchfork Media Inc.
2006 saw the release of Beware of the Maniacs which the duo generated, which gave way to The Dodos, under the name Dodo Bird, breaking edge and began the touring history of the band. The change in band name is simply born from the fact that fans just called the band The Dodos. Visiter is the album which watched The Dodos reach musical significance across the indie board, released in 2008, only a few months after being signed. The band has incorporated talented musicians, such as Joe Haener who brought his xylophone, toy piano, and other percussions which brought a new element to the band, and guitarist Christopher Reimer, who was renowned as the guitarist for Women as well. Since the release of Visiter, the band has been through a lot, including two solid albums, Time To Die and No Color, and the death of their beloved guitarist, Reimer.
Carrier was the latest project for The Dodos, and it has seen slight change in sound and technique from their last albums. The 27th August, Polyvinyl Records will proudly release The Dodos’ debut album which is set to catch the attention of the indie music industry throughout the world. Kepping in touch with the band’s folk, psych, and prog sounds, they have successfully incorporated harder guitars, and this change has been nothing but beneficial, as this album is gold. Writing their fifth LP, Long wanted to start over, the consequence of the hardship faced in losing Reimer in recent past years, they wanted to reassess their sound, songwriting, and band as a whole. As Long stated:
“Chris was a huge influence on the way I think about guitar, songwriting, and music in general. Seeing how he could transform and shape sound with an electric guitar inspired me to explore more tones and use those tones to begin writing a song.”
The dynamics of the band had changed, a striking difference was that Long had decided on writing his lyrics before working on the instrumentals, and the focus on the electric guitar became central. Long claimed that he had learned from Reimer two defining principles which he used in making Carrier, and they were patience in letting a song unravel and enjoy a judgement-free enthusiasm for music. The band composed the album in John Vanderslice’s Tiny Telephone studio that allowed the boys to happily create eleven songs that are unique and without technological tweaking. An honest sound and a wonderful dynamic – there is a poignant background story to the creation of this album and this emotion gleams through the tracks and is revealed to the listener.
