Joe Goddard gets funky with 'Electric Lines'

House | Sunday 23rd April 2017 | Ben

Joe Goddard’s debut album Electric Lines has just been released and it’s a dance album that pays homage to the great funk infested records of the past.

As one of the founding members of electro-pop band Hot Chip, Joe is no stranger to insanely catchy electro music however, what he is a stranger to is solo albums, but listening to Electric lines you’ll hope he releases a lot more.

Thirteen tracks long, the single ‘Home’ is the standout banger but inside the album the tracks are layered superbly and all offer the listener something incredibly different.

The different genres that are prevalent throughout the record will make for an interesting live act. The tracks all hammer home their themes in a unique way. You won’t be just humming the tracks all day, you’ll be singing your ass off!

The track ‘Lasers’ is a great example of this. Using Synths as it’s foundation the track is house music in it’s purest form. Joe Goddard has almost used this album to celebrate all of his favourite elements of electronic music and forged them all into one album.

Despite the different themes on all the tracks they all share the same funk and groove fusion. Which makes the record truly high spirited, it’s impossible not to feel optimistic when listening to this album.

Dance music nowadays has a distinct lack of sense of humour. There is the assumption that if its funny, its not good but Joe has bought that Hot Chip style tongue and cheek especially with the song ‘Funk You Up’.

The fluidity of the album really makes you enjoy just how tight and well structured all the songs are. ‘Truth Is Light’ is a perfect example of this. Intricate and tight the track represents Joe’s ability to carefully craft a mood. It’s understated and superb!

Joe’s reputation is only going to grow and grow. This album cultivates such a good feeling deep inside, and as cheesy as that sounds, maybe that’s just how good this album is.

Electric Lines is out now. Go and get it!
