Google and Bing to demote illegal pirated sites on web searches in the UK

Other | Monday 20th February 2017 | Idrees

Search engines, such as Google and Bing, are aiming to make it difficult for UK internet users to find pirated films, music and illegal streaming sport websites.

In a time where everything these days can now been found online, it has become common knowledge that you can find pirated products online, which many people exploit. The internet has provided many users the opportunity to search for pirated movies or music whilst in the comfort of their own homes as opposed to purchasing from legal outlets.

For years now, companies have aimed to track down these websites and shut them down, yet despite their efforts, more continue to pop up.

However, Google and Microsoft’s Bing have thrown their hat into the ring as they have signed up to a voluntary code of practice, to ensure offending websites are demoted in their search results. Thus, making it more difficult for internet users to come across illegal content.

This was established when the entertainment industry was able to reach an agreement with the two search engine companies after talks had been brokered by the government.

The code is expected to be in full effect by the summer and it is expected to run parallel with the existing anti-privacy measures.

So, if you are looking to watch a new movie online, perhaps it would be more easier to visit your local cinema.
